Our team are here to help you be thoroughly prepared for any upcoming gum procedure, and we can provide tips for aftercare to greatly enhance your odds of a successful recovery following the completion of your gum treatment.
When you visit our office for an initial consultation with Dr. David E. Pearson, it’s important that you notify us of any medications or medical conditions you have so that we can provide optimal treatment.
Keep in mind that your gum procedure may require you to receive deep sedation for your comfort during the course of treatment. If this occurs, we will notify you in advance so that you can arrange your ride home. It’s also a good idea to have someone who can take care of you at home while you are recovering so that you can rest and focus on healing quickly.
Following the procedure, we may recommend a diet of soft foods to give your gums a break while they are healing. Prior to your appointment, you can stock up on soft foods such as yogurt, mashed potatoes and applesauce, and ensure you have the means to maintain proper hydration to aid your recovery. Keep your fluids lukewarm and avoid the use of a straw so that the suction doesn’t disrupt the healing site.
You may also find it helpful to have sterile gauze on hand, as your surgical incisions may seep a little for a few days. If any bleeding occurs, apply sterile gauze to the area until the bleeding stops, and then use salt water to rinse your mouth gently.
We advise against the use of tobacco while you are recovering so that you don’t cause irritation to your gum tissues, increase your risk of infection or delay healing. If needed, you can speak with your doctor about a cessation program prior to your procedure.
