Dental Implants: Questions and Answers

Posted .

Did you lose a tooth? Are you a little bit too old for the tooth fairy to come? You are probably all too aware of the impact this has on your appearance, speaking voice and chewing abilities. There is an answer! David E. Pearson DMD PC in Lawrenceville, Georgia offers top-notch dental implant surgery. Here you’ll find a short beginner’s guide to dental implants.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant replaces a tooth root with a titanium screw and a real tooth with a crown, or an artificial tooth. Both professionals and their patients often find that dental implants are the best solution for missing teeth. An implant is incredibly sturdy and usually lasts several years. Dental implants include crowns, bridges, complete and partial dentures.

What is the process of dental implant surgery?

First, we will schedule preparation visits to evaluate your condition and create custom-made implants for your mouth. Then we will schedule the surgery. Depending on your needs, you may have just one surgery, or it may need to be divided into two parts.

During phase one, Dr. David E. Pearson will surgically implant the titanium screw into your jawbone. For some patients, we may be able to install the implant at the same time.

For other patients, a period of healing will be required so that the bone around the implant can tighten around the screw—a process called osseointegration. We might attach a temporary crown to the post to help with daily activities while you heal. After an appropriate length of time, phase two will commence, in which Dr. David E. Pearson will install your custom-made crown, bridge or denture onto the post into your mouth.
